I spent months thinking about what to get my dad for his birthday this year. It’s his 60th so it had to be good. I had a genius idea, that I was sure would work… until I found out someone else already got it for him. But then I had another genius idea.
Before I was born, my dad had an Irish Setter named Jesse. He got him in college, and his roommate adopted Jesse’s brother. That dog was his life! My dad had him when he started dating my mom, when they bought their house together, and during the first few years of their marriage. Even though I never met him, knew how important Jesse was to my dad.
There are tons of photos of this dog (way more than of our dog, Hershey) but they are all over the place. So, I decided to put together a photo album of Jesse for my dad’s birthday. I scanned all the photos I could find, and put them together in a gorgeous photo book with a linen cover.

Albums are so amazing because you can pick them up whenever you want and relive your favorite memories. You get to feel those feelings you had all over again. And aren’t snuggley puppy feels the best kind of feels?
I don’t have any evidence to back this up but I really feel like seeing a physical print of an image can create a stronger emotional connection to the memory than just looking at it on your phone or laptop. Photos are so powerful and prints really enhance that power.
Now my dad can relive the days he spent with his favorite dog, whenever he wants. And, when I come home to visit, I can experience the love he had for Jesse through these photos too.
