One of the pleasures of getting to be a Denver arts events photographer is photographing Opera Colorado’s Artists in Residence’s annual spring concert. These concerts are a mix of opera and musical theater numbers so they can appeal to everyone. I meet a lot of people who come with their friends and had never heard opera before. These concerts are a great way to introduce new people to opera. Opera fans have an opportunity to mix and mingle with the Artists and everyone always has a blast.
An Afternoon of American Song | Denver Arts Events
Last season’s Afternoon of American Song premiered in Opera Colorado’s brand new space. The Opera also set up an art gallery in the space showcasing black and white photography. Patrons could stroll through the gallery before and after the concert. There were also portraits and bios of all the composers from the songs that were chosen for this concert. I love that this event had so much going on to enhance the overall experience. After the performance, there was a reception with yummy food and a chance to meet and greet the Artists themselves. And the best part of the day was that someone brought their dog! General and artistic director, Greg Carpenter, was quite enamored with this adorable and very patient pup as you can see in the last photo.
Sadly, one of the Artists in Residence died after the end of the season. It was difficult for everyone, needless to say. Thinking back, I’m so grateful that his family, friends, and colleagues had these photographs of him doing what he loved most-singing his heart out! This is what photography is really all about. These moments are so important to preserve.
